Freda Payne grew up in Detroit with sister Scherrie Payne of the Supremes, listening to intoxicating jazz singers like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. In New York City she worked with Quincy Jones, Lionel Hampton, Sammy Davis Jr. and Pearl Bailey. When she released "Band of Gold," the song transformed Freda from an unknown talent into an international Pop celebrity. Her supreme talent and genuine musicality have made her a mainstay in the music scene. This show also features saxophonists Stanley Turrentine and Jerome Richardson.

Ad Lib (filmed in 1980) was the first musical television series recorded in Stereo.
