Gonzalo Rubalcaba Trio

One of the premier artists in Afro-Cuban music, brings together a cornerstone of bebop and a contemporary of Afro-Cuban percussion to create a Trio of depth and breadth. The Trio traverses mainly through bebop classics, but also takes their audience on brief trips to the more modern. Towards the end of the set the Trio finally travels to their Afro-Cuban roots and then concludes with a light-hearted traditional jazz number. A pleasure not only to hear but also to watch.

Gonzalo Rubalcaba  -  Solos: The Jazz Sessions

As one of the most important figures to emerge in the '90s, Rubalcaba is an versatile pianist able to blend Cuban and American jazz traditions into a fresh, modern whole. Born into a musical family in Havana, Rubalcaba began studying classical piano in 1971 at age eight, honing his technique for the next 12 years while playing around Havana by night. By the time he arrived on the international jazz stage in the late '80s he was widely considered one of the great virtuosos of the music.

The performance of this magnificent band was recorded at Montreux, Switzerland, on July 14, 1988, and includes interviews with Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter and festival creator Claude Nobs.

Joining the regular Santana line-up in the band were Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ravi Coltrane, and Idrissa Diop with further guest appearance through the night from Angelique Kidjo, Barbara Morrison, Patti Austin, Sylver Sharp, Steve Winwood, and Nile Rodgers. Also included are additional tracks, behind the scenes footage, and Santana interview.
